WordPress vs BlogSpot

As many of you may already know,my old blog (http://rajays.blogspot.com) was running under the Blogspot.com platform. It is extremely easy to set up blogs at Blogspot and add the different widgets and page elements and even Google Adsense codes using the Blogger backend interface. When you want to add something new all you had to do was add a new Page Element and put your codes in there. That’s it. Google Adsense Elements was built into the backend and that made it very easy to integrate your ads into your blogs. All in all BlogSpot is a great free blogging tool and very easy for beginners to start posting in a matter of minutes. You do not need to know any HTML,Java,FTP and so on and that makes it ideal for beginners.

Eventhough BlogSpot served me well for several years,I did find it lacking in many features. The lack of more eye-pleasing templates was the most frustrating for me. Thay had a few basic templates and if you wanted to add your ownflair and change the layout then you would need to know how to code or hire a programmer. Another great feature that is really in need there is the option to create pages that work seperate from the blogging system. There are many reasons to want to add pages such as contact, about and lists and other information pages that works outside the blog system. These basic features are a must if one is to create a comprehensive and lively website or blog. These and other drawbacks have compelled me to start this new blog with WordPress.

So I went and registered a domain and bought myself a good hosting service. I installed WordPress and here we are. WordPress does require a little bit of learning and getting used to. It also requires that you know FTP to be able to add different themes, widgets and plug-ins into the WordPress backend interface. Once you learn these basics you will find that WordPress is a far superior system.

To begin with WordPress has several thousand themes to choose from. This is great. Everyday new themes are also created by people from all over that you can download and use. The theme for this website was downloaded and installed in under 10 minutes.

WordPress also gives you the functions of adding unlimited number of pages that work outside the blog system. Now I can add as many pages as I want easily and make this blog work like a regular website. This one feature alone is good enough to move over to WordPress.

As WordPress is so widely used, these are so many people creating all kinds of widgets and plug-ins to use with WordPress. This is really great because this gives you the ability to really customize your blog and add elements to really personalize your blog.

So all in all I am glad I moved to this WordPress system and highly recommend others to use it to create dynamic website style blogs to brand themselves and their websites.

  • No one can argue about the part that Blogspot has a really great performance, but lacks greatly in services. I love Google and all, but, really, they need to put up more useful features in their blogging platform.
